The book is based on the assumption, that writing is by no means, as often maintained, a secondary system subordinate to language, but an autonomous, fully functional form to express language. The book provides an instructive overview about all linguistically relevant aspects of script (e.g. types of script and systems of script, history of script, graphemics, orthography, language acquisition). At the same time it refers to current topics (e.g. writing in the internet and the latest developments of the spelling reform). Thus the reader is given a compact introduction into the subject matter, which has become increasingly relevant for the studies and examination. The available edition concludes with a chapter about typography (written by Jürgen Spitzmüller). It introduces the reader into fundamental concepts of a field that has received only little attention until a short time ago. Practice tasks, solution proposals, commented further reading and an elaborate glossary round the book off.
