The anthology comprises thirteen articles by Gerhard Sellin, New Testament scholar from Hamburg, part of which have not been published yet. Most of the articles deal with an issue of ongoing topicality from various perspectives and by incorporating the recent literary and linguistic discussions: What is the basic function and persistent theological meaning of figurative forms of religious language (metaphors, symbols, allegories) employed in Early Judaism and New Testament writings? The remaining articles examine the complex relationship of oral and written traditions in the formative phase of the transmission of the Gospels.
