Perceptions of threat have always played a central role in foreign policy. This conference volume on “Fear in International Politics” examines the relevance of fear for decision-making processes in foreign policy by drawing on selected case studies in modern times. Following theoretical preliminary considerations, the first section differentiates between various emotions connected with fear. The next part analyses how fear influences perception. After that, the volume focuses on the instrumentalisation of fear and the fear that politicians have of the fears of the populace. The volume closes with two historical overviews dealing with the motives of fear stretching over several centuries. The variety of perspectives in this volume give new impulses for the examination of decision-making processes and stresses the necessity of historical analyses of emotional factors.
