Image and news search engines make use of information and the works of others often without obtaining the consent of the copyright owners. Constantin Fahl makes a comprehensive examination of the legitimacy of the activities of search engine operators in respect of copyright, personal rights and competition legislation. He also discusses possible legal privileges and the question which individual persons can be made liable. The practice-oriented approach includes law enforcement in Germany and abroad and concrete proposals for the proper legal behaviour of search engine operators. The author also discusses the use of thumbnails and the German Supreme Court Judgment of 29.04.2010 on preview images. He concludes that this judgment still leaves important legal questions unresolved.
