In a long-term cultural history of the Germania personification, Bettina Brandt explores the historically changing semantics of gender images in symbolic discourses of a modern German nation. The modern linkage between nation and civic rights was systematically based on a gendered difference between the feminine embodiment of the nation’s unstable boundaries and a unity of male historico-political agents – an imaginary that had highly restricting effects on women’s civic equality.
