This study describes the story of the German Academies of Sciences and their Associations at the end of the 19th century in a micro historic approach, focussing on their action and interaction at the local, national, and international level. By investigating this intertwined process of institutionalization, it tries to reconstruct the patterns and schemes by which history developed as a process of organization. By following the ways and by ways in which plans are designed, negotiated, discussed, dismissed in part, partly realized, and perceived more and more as institutions with a specific profile, the book describes how institutionalization evolves as the history and historiography of these associated events.
