In the fifty years after Bertolt Brecht’s death international research has gathered a plethora of information on Brecht’s life, his poetry and prose, his theatre productions, his theoretical writings. The enormous increase in knowledge corresponds surely enough with the resolution of the image of the author and his works. While research betakes itself to single studies and handbooks it is getting more unclear what influenced Brecht’s works and how they developed, and where the significance of his works lies. The objective of “Ungeheuer Brecht” is to answer these and many other questions. The book traces the development of Brecht’s works: from his firstling “Baal” across the operas and educational plays from the years of the Weimar Republic up to the classical exile dramas Mother Courage, The Good Man of Sezuan, The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
