With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty the human dignity is guaranteed in Article 1 of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights as inviolable basic right and legal principle: »Human Dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected.« The present study investigates the extent to which human dignity is guaranteed by the basic law of the European Union. In particular, the different cultural understanding of human dignity in Europe raises the question of the possibility of a common European legal concept of human dignity. Core of this study is the guarantee of human dignity in Article 1 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which is elaborated by an analysis of European sources of law, jurisprudence and literature.
