In the 1970s there was a short-lived interest in the theology and religious education of play; today there are a large number of didactic instructions concerning play, but no cohesive theory of play in religious education. Playing is employed in religious education as a method, but does not form a central idea or principle. The loss of importance of play in religious education is regrettable. How does religious education deal with the fact that play and playing are integral parts of human life? This volume looks at play as an pedagogical dimension of religious education. It investigates the most important theological documents – from the Bible to Martin Luther, Comenius, and Schleiermacher up to modern theological and ethical concepts and discussions, and shows that play is understood in theological and religious studies circles today as one dimension of human educational processes.
