This study examines the relationship between mentality and literature. In a paradigmatic analysis of the two novels, it isolates three complexes of mental structures: the novels share the complex of Gnostic contempt of mundane existence. In opposition to each other, Hesse's case shows the complex of sentimentality; Kasantzakis features the complex of sensuality. The two opposite tendencies are compared as adaptations of the antique ›Naïve‹ (Schiller) and are related to different basic characteristics in the respectively corresponding national literature.
