This volume is concerned with communicative processes in which binding norms for social systems are negotiated. The authors examine the intentions, content and contexts of political statements from the whole political spectrum, as well as the actors involved. The statements testify to the questioning of existing orders, the need to form a consensus, the articulation of resistance and conflict, the assertion of binding norms and values, and even the shaping of political spaces. The time-frame of the study extends from antiquity to the 20th century; in the various contributions language is not seen as a free, intentional act, but always as a function of historical, intellectual and social circumstances.
