Why was Russia able to appropriate and integrate Siberia – both geographically and mentally – while other imperial powers lost their colonies?
In her book Claudia Weiss follows the process of mental appropriation of Siberia by the Russian Empire in the 19th century, a process that significantly marked Russian identity. A central role in the mental appropriation was played by the Russian Geographical Society (RGO). As an institution of civil society, the RGO was influential in propagating the images that modified the perception of Siberia during the 19th century away from a frozen jailhouse to the land representing Russia’s glorious future.
