The meaning of Abba according to Joachim Jeremias and his followers as opposed to its actual use attested by texts from Old Aramaic to late Jewish Aramaic and Hebrew traditional literature.
According to the NT scholar Joachim Jeremias, the singularity of Abba as a form of addressing and designating God is based on the origin and character of the way little children address their father, and it was therefore not an acceptable means of addressing God in prayer. His explication was widely accepted by theologians, biblical scholars and preachers. An examination of the use of Abba within most Aramaic and Jewish Hebrew texts seemed necessary. The study shows that Abba should be identified with the word "father" without any specifically childlike connotation, as demonstrated by the oldest quotation available and its Greek translation Abba ho pathèr.
