In our ever more complex society, counseling is gaining in importance. Trends such as globalization, individualization and knowledge overload are producing anxiety and uncertainty at the many choices and decisions that have to be made. This is a major challenge today that calls for a consistent theory of counseling which is simultaneously completely professional. One metatheory that can guide the design and analysis of counseling processes is that of self-organization, which underlies synergetics. This variation of system theory focuses on the reciprocal effects of elements in complex, nonlinear systems. Their interaction leads to the creation of specific patterns as well as to transitions from existing patterns to new ones.
On the basis of so-called generic (active) principles that foster changes in the order of things, the role of the counselor is to support change processes from a poorly adapted to a new, well-adapted pattern. These (active) principles allow one to choose very specifically from the various methods available and to prepare the proper criteria for good counseling.
This volume considers the conceptional and methodological background of the job-related counseling of both persons and organizations. It presents the latest empirical studies from the fields of vocational counseling, coaching, outplacement counseling, training and advanced training of counselors, organizational counseling and interorganizational counseling.
