For Protestant Christians the Reformation represents the most important era in the 2000-year-old history of Christianity. Protestant identity stems even today from what happened during the Reformation. For Protestant Church history the Reformation is seen as an independent epoch in the history of the Protestant church, theology and piety. The Reformation marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Early Modern Age; it is followed by the Confessional Age, which continued up to 1648, when the Peace of Münster and Osnabrück granted additional tolerance. But its tracks can be felt up to the end of the 18th century.
