Septuagint studies have witnessed a considerable rise of interest over the last three decades, not least on the wake of several immportant translation projects. Among them, the French projet La Bible d´Alexandrie has played a pioneering role. Since the 1980s, it has published 16 volumes of amply commented translations. In 1999, a German project entitled Septuaginta Deutsch (LXX.D) was launched and has already produced a complete German translation of the Septuagint, published in 2009. A companion commentary volume is in preparation. Both projects engage scholars from several countries.
Since it is impossible to translate the Septuagint without considering the many problems raised by its text, both translation projects have also generated basic research on behalf of the scholars involved. The present volume offers contributions presented at a joint French-German conference held at Strasbourg in 2004. They address specific problems which occur where the Septuagint text is preseved in two divergent translations or where the Greek translation is particularly literal in character.
