Numerous 12th and 13th-century sources bear witness to a particularly pronounced appreciation of eloquence. In the light of more recent studies on the influence of rhetoric on the self-conception of the aristocracy in ancient Rome, it makes sense to take a look at the same time at functions of eloquence in the communes, yet this still remains to be done. The present volume addresses this omittance for the first time in a multi-perspective approach, by analysing political and religious forms of public rhetoric in the light of the respective circumstances of their origin and functionalisation. Public speeches and epistolary rhetoric in the Italian communes are examined both in the context of contemporary theoretical treatises and in their practical implementation. Each of these defined peculiarities of eloquence in the communes are each examined closely in terms of their specific social functions and contrasted with comparable forms of rhetoric at the Curia, the Staufer Court and in Byzantium.
