The subject of this study is the communicative display of different types of anxiety based on the analysis of audio and video recordings of conversations between patients and doctors/ therapists.
The theoretical starting point is the assumption that emotions should not just be seen as subjective experiences that can be observed objectively, but that they are moreover intersubjective experiences that are an integral part of interaction. The aim of the study is twofold: On the one hand, our knowledge of the ways and means that anxiety is communicated must be radically expanded – as yet there is still a lack of basic research findings. On the other, the study points to possibilities where clinical issues can also be addressed.
The background of the study is the relevance of the communication of anxiety in clinical practice and the signficance of emotional display for interactive processes in general.
