In the 16th century, Wittenberg became a hotbed of municipal musical culture of supra-regional signficance for the cultivation of music in practice and in theory. The author takes an institutional and social historical approach to her study of Wittenberg and investigates the castle church, the town church and the university, the main institutions of municipal musical cultivation. Extensive, largely unedited source material is analysed for the first time from a music-historical point of view. The focus of interest thereby lies both in the theoretical, humanist discourse about music and musical performance. In addition, on the basis of the reconstruction of libraries and collections in Wittenberg a profile is drawn up of their significance for the preservation, reproduction, sale and performance of music. The case of Wittenberg shows the many facetted relations between the town and music in the early modern age.
