The 1968 student movement has hitherto almost always been considered as a whole, with the philosophical faculties at the fore. But how did the revolt take place in the medical faculty? What were the consequences of the protest of a new generation of medical practitioners for medicine? The historian Ralf Forsbach examines these questions among other things with a view to changes in the physician-patient relationship, a new approach to sexuality and the body and the consumption of hard drugs. The young medical critics rejected the affected behaviour of "demi-gods in white coats"; they sought to reform psychiatry. Their specific endeavours to make changes were accompanied by a new criticism of medicine during the Nazi regime and its protagonists, some of whom were still practising or in office. The author also takes a look at the excesses of the reform movement, such as the "Socialist Patients' Collective" and its associations with what later became the Red Army Faction. – The study leads us to the present day, analysing the consequences of fundamental changes such as the promotion of preventive medicine or the increasing media coverage of medical issues.
