The great scholar of religion and ecumenical leader Nathan Söderblom (1866–1931) is only partially known in the English-speaking world. Much of his many-faceted work has never been translated from the original Swedish. Existing literature either explores important aspects of his work or limits its scope to the Swedish environment. The present monograph aims to overcome these limitations and to offer a coherent picture of the whole. Söderblom's views and activities are shown in their biographical as well as contemporary social, religious, and intellectual context. Extensive use has been made not only of his copious literary production, but also of his unpublished remains, as well as of the works of those important thinkers and churchmen of the time with whom he was engaged in a lively exchange of ideas. In this way an attempt is made to communicate on an international scale a panorama of the period before and after World War I as seen through the eyes of one of its most prominent representatives.
