Church services pick up on everyday situations and the desires they hide. Clubs and private individuals, even whole chruch parishes will find a reason to celebrate. But how should services with clubs be carried out? How to celebrate special occasions? Or should they rather best be skirted? Amelie Gräfin zu Dohna, Hans-Helmar Auel and Hans-Gerit Auel grapple with the problem of how not to ritualise everyday situations and still be true to the Christian content. As Protestant pastors they travel to the well-known Land of Symbols known to but a few, it would seem.
Church services with clubs lead to contact with many different surroundings and show that „our services are at once attractive and decidedly foreign” (M. Nicol). Many church holidays are (unfortunately) also foreign or unknown – waiting to be rediscovered, as it were. Celebrating the christening of new church bells, renovated churches and restored church organs are all opportunities to meet and converse. Parish anniversaries and employee celebrations are all causes for varied services. Even the consecration of a new house can be a cause celebre. Such practical experiences form the basis for one´s own attempts.
